Module 1 to be held at Pattishall, 20th October 2018

Tutored by Gill Hughes, this is module 1 of the ART Training scheme (teaching bell handling), to be held at Holy Cross Pattishall, Northamptonshire.  The course is equally suitable for both experienced teachers and those who are new to teaching.

Module 1 breaks down teaching bell handling into small, manageable steps, starting with the bell ‘down’ and the day course contains a mixture of a theory presentation with discussion and practical exercises in the tower. The theory session includes some discussion of coaching theory, working with ringers who learn differently, giving positive relevant feedback and developing observation skills. Practical exercises focus on helping each ringer to perfect individual aspects of bell handling when broken down into small steps, and gradually join these together so that poor handling habits can be avoided from the outset.

Following the day course, delegates are encouraged to begin teaching and putting into practice everything they have learned by teaching someone to ring, using the Learning the Ropes scheme. Delegates will be given access to the SmART Ringer website so that they can download resources to use in the tower, complete a theory quiz to help remember what was covered on the day course, review the PowerPoints from the course itself, register ringers onto Learning the Ropes and request certificates as they progress.

ART recommend that delegates fill out a log book during their teaching to record lesson plans and review lessons afterwards. When a delegate has completed their log book and feels ready, they can invite an ART assessor to come along and watch them teach, hopefully leading to accreditation with ART for teaching bell handling.

Holy Cross is a ground floor ring of 6 easygoing bells. A light lunch will be served in the Church during the break, with a suggested donation of £4 to cover this and teas / coffees during the break. Although parking is unrestricted on the roads nearest to the Church, visiting ringers should be aware that some of the roads are quite narrow, so care needs to be taken.

Course fees are £20 payable to ART, and spaces can be requested by filling in this booking form on the SmART Ringer calendar.

Hi Roger, All the courses and workshops are listed on the SmART Ringer booking calendar which can be found here

    https://smartringer.org/public/daycourses/

At the bottom of the page, there is also a place to register for alerts about new courses and workshops, so you’ll get an email every time anything new is posted up.

Hope that helps, in the Somerset area we have two courses coming up – 27th Nov at Chilcompton (organised by Nicki Lang) and 5th January in South Somerset, tower TBC (organised by Jill Hansford).

    Best wishes,

    Rose (ART Administrator)
