Listening to others ringing is a great way to train your ear and improve your striking.
If you’ve already taken part in a striking competition, this could be another way of contributing and developing your listening skills at the same time.
You could sit with a judge during a local striking competition and assist with recording some of the information they will need for their feedback comments (e.g. time taken to ring touch, counting the rows). Or you could listen to the striking and mark your own score sheets, comparing your observations with the official judge. The opportunity to do this with a number of other new ringers could be one of the reasons for organising a competition yourself.
As your listening skills develop, you might start to be able to distinguish which method the team are ringing too.
There are a number of online resources that allow you to practise judging a piece of ringing in order to improve your listening skills – or why not record your own team ringing then sit together and listen to it with a critical ear?
