Information

Abel Simulator Workshop
Date: Saturday 2nd February 2019
Location: St Mary, Oxted, Surrey

A simulator is a valuable learning tool that can be used at home and in the tower. It can significantly speed up the learning process and give you the opportunity to practise your ringing without the need for a full band of ringers, or teach your beginners far more efficiently.

Simulator software has developed massively in recent years. However many ringers are not aware of the many different ways in which simulators can be used, or the features that are now available. Abel is a simulator programme that runs on PC’s (the other two are Beltower and Virtual Belfry). Of the three, Abel is the one most commonly used. The aim of this half-day workshop is to explain the key features of Abel.

This half-day workshop is designed to take people through the various stages from ringing rounds on the simulator, to plain hunting and ringing a bell inside to simple methods. Once mastered, using a simulator to progress on to ringing other methods inside can be quite rapid, and delegates will know enough to progress further on their own.

St Mary’s, Oxted has a ring of six bells, each with its own sensor and we will have six simulators set up in the tower. Delegates will work in pairs, two to each ‘workstation’. The majority of the workshop will be spent in practical exercises, so you should go away fully conversant with Abel and how it can be used.

To benefit from this workshop you should at least be able to plain hunt the treble to a method.

The Workshop will be presented by Roger Booth, an ART Tutor, and delegates will receive a detailed handout explaining the material covered in the workshop, developed by Roger in conjunction with Chris Hughes, author of Abel.

Oxted is convenient for the M25 and has its own rail station, served by trains from London Bridge and Victoria.
