Open days are organised by a group of people usually to raise funds for a project. You can think of them as a big outing with many towers available to ring at just for an hour or so. An open day is a great opportunity to ring on unfamiliar bells and meet lots of other ringers. Many will have travelled long distances to attend these events.
Open days are usually advertised in the Ringing World, with details of local ones available on your local ringing society’s website and newsletters.
If you’re going to ring at a lot of towers it is best to go with another ringer to help with navigation along the route; satnav info for towers is usually available from Dove’s Guide but don’t rely on satnavs as GPS signals are variable in quality. OS maps are ideal for locating churches and navigating.
Plan for the fact that you may have to queue for a ring, or you may arrive and find you are the only person there and need to wait for others to turn up!
