For this challenge you should be instructed by someone with experience in belfry maintenance especially as you’ll be working with sharp tools.
If the opportunity to do this challenge is not available locally arrange for a half or one day course with a knowledgeable tutor. Your local ringing society may be able to provide this, and no doubt there will be other ringers who would like to attend as well.
“I was surprised how fascinating and enjoyable I found our local splicing workshop. We had a lot of laughs and ended the morning with a pub lunch. You might find that you have an aptitude for splicing and are better at it than many experienced ringers! I’ve been asked to splice two ropes for other towers since the workshop, and I thoroughly enjoy it.”
For practice at home, get some old rope and watch the helpful videos on YouTube for making a short splice. Be very careful with sharp tools!
