A clean and uncluttered ringing chamber is a much nicer environment in which to ring and gives a much better impression to anyone who visits the tower because they are interested in learning to ring. Have a look round your ringing chamber next time you’re there and you’ll notice how many decades of stuff has accumulated without anyone really noticing.
Why not organise a spring clean? Or if your tower has a regular cleaning rota make sure your name is on the list. If cleaning involves working at height make sure there’s someone else there to help you.
Ringing chambers can often fill up with old ropes, magazines, posters, electrical equipment and all sorts of other church detritus which will never be used again but is there ‘just in case’ – be ruthless if you can! If something is old and interesting why not photograph it and send the photo to a local ringing archivist or use it as a prop if you’re helping with a recruitment event? Or why not tick off yet another challenge by taking along a few interesting items when giving a talk about bell ringing?
It’s a good idea to have a check list of things to do (e.g. dust top of peal boards) unless it is all very straight forward.
