Ringing and bells are fascinating subjects for a history project. The internet is the obvious place to start, giving you an overview of bellringing history and geographic variation from which you can decide what interests you and direct your future research.
If you’re lucky there will already be some research published online and the information readily available. Your local ringing society might well have an Archivist you can talk to and don’t forget to look at old copies of the Ringing World and ringing books – ask around, there will be a local ringer who has an extensive book collection that you could study.
With the current interest in WWI have a look at the Central Council Rolls of Honour and combine your study of the history of bell ringing with the events and regiments of WW1. You’ll find a number of like-minded bell ringing researchers are working in this area who will be keen to share sources and ideas with you.
Your research could form the basis of a fascinating talk or news article promoting ringing in the local community
