Minster in Kent – starting a new band from scratch

Until 2014, there had been no ringing at St Mary’s, Minster – the bells were silent. So, I started work with cleaning, making the tower habitable and the 5 bells ringable again.

Another thing the Tower was short of was ringers!…. I decided to attend an ART Module 1 course to brush up my teaching and it was not long after this that we got five new learners. I started teaching them using the Learning the Ropes scheme and we had them ringing in a very short time.

Since that time, we have lost a few ringers (moving out of the area etc), and were in need of a few more to keep the band going. I was very surprised when three people approached me, asking to learn. I was also surprised just how fast they did learn, being able to ring rounds after only four lessons.

To cut a long story short, I was very proud of them when they were recently presented  with their LtR level 1 certificates by our Vicar….and I hope to be doing the same with a new band I am teaching at Eythorne (story to follow shortly!)
