Outing to Ring in Cambridge

I joined Marsworth Tower in Aug 2014 after seeing an advert inviting the reader to ‘Try some heavy metal’. I thought that these people obviously had a sense of humour! I was looking to learn something new, so, why not?

I enjoy outings; driving through local villages and trying different bells.

This Summer I went on an outing to Cambridge with Hemel Ringers. It was a lovely sunny day. We went to 3 towers in the morning. All Saints in Melbourn (8 bells), All Saints in Little Shelford (6 bells) and St Mary in Great Shelford (8 bells).

We then went to Cambridge City Centre. Walking from tower to tower in the sunshine, amid the tourists, was a wonderful atmospheric experience. The ice cream was good too!

After lunch we went to Our Lady & the English Martyrs (8 bells), followed by St Edwards (6 bells), then my favourite tower, St Bene’t (6 bells), ground floor ringing. The bells were not as daunting as I expected. This tower is Anglo Saxon and the oldest building in Cambridge. We had an audience of many nationalities as we rang, again, a new experience!

After a bus ride back to the Park and Ride we rang at St Helen in Little Eversden (6 bells).

We celebrated the end of a tiring but lovely day with a very good dinner!

I was very pleased not to be the one who had to stay awake to drive home!
