Module 2 Courses from the ART Training Scheme focus on enhancing our skills for teaching early method ringing. The course itself is the first step in teacher development which can lead towards accreditation with ART for teaching change ringing if desired.
Although many delegates who attend M2C have already attended M1 courses in teaching bell handling, this is not compulsory. Many teachers who do not teach handling but who are involved in running practices still enjoy attending ART M2C courses.
The course at St Annes on the Sea will be tutored by Paul Lewis and includes a mixture of theory and practical exercises.
Topics covered include how to help ringers set achievable goals and work towards them in manageable steps, break down methods into smaller parts so that they are easier to understand, run an effective practice, how to ‘stand behind’ and give relevant & timely advice, keep ringers motivated and help them enjoy their ringing as they progress.
Course delegates need to be able to ring a minimum of plain bob minor inside in order to take part fully in the practical side which can include ringing training exercises such as the bayles method, original minor, bastow minor and treble bob hunting.
M2C is a recommended course for Tower Captains and ringing masters who wish to extend their teaching skills and help their band get into methods, but also for those who aspire to teach and can create opportunities to develop their teaching by organising and running workshops or focussed practices.
The M2C course itself is only the first part of the skill development process for teachers. After the course, teachers will go home with a log book in which they can record their practice plans and reviews, teaching change ringing at any level which is useful locally. They will also have full access to SmART Ringer which contains a wealth of teaching resources and toolkits to download and use in the tower.
Once teachers have recorded four practices and feel confident, a visit from an ART Assessor can be arranged to watch the teacher running a practice and demonstrating the teaching skills which they have been developing since the M2C course. It is this accreditation process which reinforces good teaching practice.
The course at St Anne’s will start at 10.15 am. There will be a lunch break during which delegates are advised to bring their own packed lunches. Teas, coffees and soft drinks with biscuits will be available during the break sessions. There is some on street parking on the road to the West of the Church.
The postcode of the Church is FY8 3BB and the O.S. grid reference is SD327293
Course fees of £20 are payable to ART and places can be requested by filling out the booking form on the SmART Ringer diary here.
